How to Start and Grow Your YouTube Channel In 2020

Have you been thinking about starting a YouTube channel but don’t exactly know where to start?? Maybe you are afraid of what other people might think of you. Well, fear not because I am here to help you and get you motivated to finally start your channel!

Yes, recording yourself with a camera in your bedroom is not normal. But trust me, people do it all the time. We are in 2020, and with everything going on around the world, it’s time to start doing what YOU want to do!

I will be going over tips and tricks that I used to start and grow my YouTube channel. I started my first channel in 2018 before starting another one 3 months back, I have learned a couple of things along the way.

Just Start Today!

Do you know that one thing called procrastination? We all struggle with it but it’s time to overcome it. In most cases, it’s easy to keep saying “I will start tomorrow.” The reality is that if you just start today you will be thanking yourself later. No matter what, the time will pass anyway!

Don’t go out and buy a fancy camera when you are just starting. Your phone will do a good enough job! Android and iPhones nowadays record awesome quality so there is no need to buy an expensive camera in the beginning. If it turns out that you like making videos then go ahead and upgrade your camera if you have the means!

I use my iPhone 7 and my J1 Ace.

Create an Eye-Catching Channel Banner and Profile Photo

The first impression is everything when someone clicks on your channel. When it comes to your profile photo, have a clear image of your face. It’s always nice to show potential subscribers/viewers what you look like and who you are.

For your channel banner, you can create a great graphic on Pic Monkey or Canva. It’s super easy to use and they are both free. You have the option to upgrade your account if you want to as well!

Before we keep moving on, I want to make a little side note. I mentioned this in my video above, but whenever you are just starting out on YouTube never compare your journey to anyone else’s. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Just because someone might grow faster than you doesn’t mean that you won’t get where you want your channel to be. Stick to YOUR journey and do this for YOU.

Always Show Up

If you take one thing from this article, then let it be always showing up. Stay consistent with your videos as much as you can. Let your audience know when they can expect to see a video from you, whether that is weekly or every couple of days.

It’s more likely that someone who comes across your channel will subscribe if they see you uploading often.

Thumbnails

Ok, maybe this is the most important thing. I can’t decide because all of these tips are super important! YouTube thumbnails are like the first impression at a job interview. Make them clickable and eye-catching!

Pro tip: Research shows that thumbnails with a face in them get more clicks and views!

Always Ask Your Viewers to Like & Subscribe

In your video go ahead and simply ask your audience to like your video if they enjoyed watching it and to subscribe! It takes the average viewer to watch around 2-3 videos to subscribe to someone’s channel.

Along with that, always engage with your comments and either like or comment back! This is a great way to get to know your audience and this lets them know they are important to you and your success as a YouTuber.

Keywords & SEO

As a smaller YouTuber, you want to focus on optimizing your videos for YouTube`s search engine. This is critical in the beginning stages of YouTube. Recently I have started to use Tubebuddy and found that it is SUPER helpful.

Get TubeBuddy here

Tubebuddy allows you to find keywords on your video topic to help you rank. It is a Google Chrome extension on your browser and it allows you to optimize your videos for SEO purposes.

For example, I made a video called “Instagram Growth Strategy” and I went to go search that on the search bar on YouTube to see who is ranking on the first page.
